		<description>Picturing Home

Picturing Home is a community-driven photography and storytelling project designed to empower residents of urban neighborhoods to document their lives and environments through the use of disposable cameras. The initiative brings together local artists, residents, and community organizations to preserve the cultural and historical narratives of neighborhoods experiencing rapid gentrification and transformation. For Rebecca Marimutu, Picturing Home&#38;nbsp;is a deeply personal and purposeful project that aligns her artistic practice with her commitment to social justice and community advocacy. Having grown up in a rent-stabilized apartment in Manhattan and witnessing the effects of gentrification firsthand, Rebecca has long been aware of the destabilizing forces that impact marginalized communities. Her lived experiences with housing insecurity and displacement fuel her desire to use art as a tool for empowerment and preservatio

By distributing cameras and offering photography workshops, Picturing Home encourages participants to share their personal and collective stories through images. These photographs create a visual archive that captures the essence of the community, providing a platform for underrepresented voices. The images are developed into exhibitions, publications, or public art installations, offering a space for residents to share their perspectives with a broader audience.

Past iterations of the project have included neighborhoods like Seton Hill in Baltimore, where photography-centered workshops and public exhibitions provided opportunities for community engagement. Picturing Home challenges traditional narratives of urban development by equipping residents with the tools to document, reclaim, and celebrate their spaces.

Each version of Picturing Home is uniquely tailored to the specific community it serves. The goal is to create a shared visual language that resists displacement and uplifts the stories of those who call these neighborhoods home.

<description>ABOUT PICTURING BALTIMORE ︎︎︎Welcome to Picturing Baltimore, a transformative photography project that seeks to uplift underrepresented voices and foster community engagement through the power of visual storytelling. Our mission is to challenge the dominant photographic canon by providing a platform for local residents to showcase their unique perspectives and narratives.
At Picturing Baltimore, we believe that everyone has a story to tell, and through photography, we aim to amplify those voices that are often overlooked or marginalized. By empowering individuals within the Baltimore community, we strive to create a more inclusive and representative art scene that truly reflects the diverse experiences and cultures that make up our vibrant city.
Through a collaborative approach, we distribute disposable cameras to residents across Baltimore, providing them with the opportunity to capture their own neighborhoods, communities, and everyday lives. By using disposable cameras, we intentionally step away from the constraints of traditional photography equipment, allowing for a more accessible and organic representation of our city.
Our project serves as a catalyst for community engagement, facilitating meaningful connections and conversations through photography. We host workshops, artist talks, and other events that encourage participants to explore their creativity, develop their photographic skills, and connect with like-minded individuals who share a passion for storytelling.
"Picturing Baltimore" is also a pivotal opportunity for Rebecca Marimutu to expand her artistic practice, engage in a new way of making art, and collaborate with the vibrant local community. By creating two community-sourced collages measuring 5'x8', she will incorporate photographs from participants to respect the city's history and culture while addressing the ethical considerations of representing a place as an outsider. This collaborative approach will offer Marimutu valuable insights into residents' perspectives while emphasizing democratizing access to art and creating a living archive of Baltimore residents' experiences while celebrating the richness of diverse primary sources.

By showcasing the photographs captured by local residents at two gallery locations in Balitmore, Picturing Baltimore provides a platform for sharing diverse narratives and perspectives. Through our curated exhibitions and flat-files show, we aim to foster dialogue, challenge stereotypes, and celebrate the rich culture and history of Baltimore.
The organizers of&#38;nbsp; Picturing Baltimore are passionate individuals committed to creating meaningful change through&#38;nbsp; art. We work not only captures the essence of Baltimore but also serves as a powerful tool for social transformation. Each artist who participates brings a unique vision and perspective to the project, contributing to a collective tapestry of stories that reflect the true fabric of our city.
We invite you to join us on this inspiring journey of discovery, connection, and artistic expression. Together, let's reimagine the role of photography in shaping narratives and champion the voices that deserve to be heard.

<description>PARTICPATE ︎︎︎We believe that every resident of Baltimore has a unique perspective to share, and we invite you to participate in the Picturing Baltimore project. This is an exciting opportunity to showcase your photographic vision, contribute to a community-driven art project, and be a part of the vibrant cultural tapestry of our city. Participation is free and accessible to all.

Here's how you can get involved:

Obtaining Disposable Cameras: We have partnered with NomuNomu and Black Artist Research Space, two community-oriented venues, to distribute disposable cameras. Visit either location during their operating hours to pick up a camera. We will provide you with everything you need to get started. Please note that cameras are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so we recommend visiting as early as possible to secure your camera.

Guidelines for Capturing Photographs: Once you have your disposable camera, take some time to explore Baltimore and capture the moments that resonate with you. There are no specific themes or restrictions for the photographs. We encourage you to document the beauty, diversity, and everyday life of our city. Let your unique perspective shine through your lens.

Returning the Cameras: After a month of capturing photographs, we kindly ask you to return the disposable camera to the same location where you picked it up. Simply drop it off in the designated drop box at NomuNomu or Black Artist Research Space. This will allow us to process and scan the film, ensuring that your photographs can be included in the final exhibition.

Exhibition and Recognition: Your photographs have the opportunity to be showcased in our community art show and flat-files exhibition, held at NomuNomu and Black Artist Research Space. We value your ownership of your work, and you will retain copyright over your photographs. We will provide you with digital copies of your images and celebrate your contribution to the project.

		<description>
COLLABORATORS ︎︎︎
Picturing Baltimore is made possible through the collective efforts and contributions of a diverse group of individuals, artists, community partners, and sponsors. We are grateful for their invaluable support and dedication to making this project a reality. Here are some of the talented collaborators who have played a crucial role in shaping the project:

Rebecca Marimutu&#38;nbsp;︎︎︎ Rebecca Marimutu is a photographer and educator from New York City, based in Baltimore. Her artistic practice explores self, identity, and material tactility through photography, collage, paper sculpture, and audio-visual abstraction. Her work looks to divest from the traditional photography canon by emphasizing contemporary artists interrogating the medium’s history. She received her MFA in 2020 from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Photographic and Electronic Media, with a concentration in Critical Studies. She's the founder and director of Anchovy Press, an independent publishing company based in Baltimore, dedicated to storytelling that centers BIPOC experiences.

Darius Fox ︎︎︎
Darrius Fox is a 28-year-old photographer from Baltimore, MD. He is a self-taught artist, initially working as a wedding photographer before transitioning to film photography. Fox currently maintains a studio at the Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower. His photographs range from urban landscapes and portraiture to street scenes of everyday life
Rhea Beckett ︎︎︎
Rhea Beckett, an curator with a keen eye for highlighting underrepresented voices, is a&#38;nbsp; crucial collaborator durring this project. With her expertise and commitment to inclusivity, Rhea ensures that the art show represents the diversity and depth of Baltimore's artistic community.
Joseph Orzal ︎︎︎&#38;nbsp;Joseph Orzal (Ignacio Joseph Orzal or JoJo-Beans) is a Filipino-Mexican American painter, sculptor, chess player and writer active in DC, Atlanta, New York, and Toronto. His Works, which combine a realistic observation of the human state, both physical and emotional, with a dramatic use of lighting usually explore palpable yet unspoken intricacies of racial, sexual, and class distinctions in Western societies, and their inevitable if unnameable tensions. He is a formative influence on the revolutionary developments in the plastic arts in the opening decades of the twenty-first century, responsible for significant developments in painting, sculpture, and social practice. After his glorious departure from the Corcoran gallery of Art for which he was part of the notorious Save the Corcoran group, he co-founded the infamous NoMüNoMü, a revolutionary intersectional artistic organization active in the United States working towards liberation for broader society from perpetual systems of oppression and class domination that permeate throughout the so called white mans so called art world.

Anysa Saleh ︎︎︎&#38;nbsp;Anysa Saleh was born and raised in the central valley of California. She is best known for her short videos and photographs documenting her experience as a Yemeni Muslim woman in the United States.

Saleh later moved to the Bay Area, where she attended California College of the Arts. She moved to the east coast in 2016 and has exhibited in the United States and abroad.

We would also like to extend our gratitude to our community partners, sponsors, and supporters who have generously contributed their resources, time, and expertise to the project. Their support enables us to provide the necessary equipment, resources, and opportunities for artists to participate and showcase their work.

At Picturing Baltimore, we believe that collaboration is essential for fostering creativity and driving positive change. We are honored to have such talented individuals and organizations on board, working together to celebrate the diverse perspectives and stories of our beloved city.
