ABOUT PICTURING BALTIMORE ︎︎︎
Welcome to Picturing Baltimore, a transformative photography project that seeks to uplift underrepresented voices and foster community engagement through the power of visual storytelling. Our mission is to challenge the dominant photographic canon by providing a platform for local residents to showcase their unique perspectives and narratives. At Picturing Baltimore, we believe that everyone has a story to tell, and through photography, we aim to amplify those voices that are often overlooked or marginalized. By empowering individuals within the Baltimore community, we strive to create a more inclusive and representative art scene that truly reflects the diverse experiences and cultures that make up our vibrant city.
Through a collaborative approach, we distribute disposable cameras to residents across Baltimore, providing them with the opportunity to capture their own neighborhoods, communities, and everyday lives. By using disposable cameras, we intentionally step away from the constraints of traditional photography equipment, allowing for a more accessible and organic representation of our city.
Our project serves as a catalyst for community engagement, facilitating meaningful connections and conversations through photography. We host workshops, artist talks, and other events that encourage participants to explore their creativity, develop their photographic skills, and connect with like-minded individuals who share a passion for storytelling.
"Picturing Baltimore" is also a pivotal opportunity for Rebecca Marimutu to expand her artistic practice, engage in a new way of making art, and collaborate with the vibrant local community. By creating two community-sourced collages measuring 5'x8', she will incorporate photographs from participants to respect the city's history and culture while addressing the ethical considerations of representing a place as an outsider. This collaborative approach will offer Marimutu valuable insights into residents' perspectives while emphasizing democratizing access to art and creating a living archive of Baltimore residents' experiences while celebrating the richness of diverse primary sources.
By showcasing the photographs captured by local residents at two gallery locations in Balitmore, Picturing Baltimore provides a platform for sharing diverse narratives and perspectives. Through our curated exhibitions and flat-files show, we aim to foster dialogue, challenge stereotypes, and celebrate the rich culture and history of Baltimore.
The organizers of Picturing Baltimore are passionate individuals committed to creating meaningful change through art. We work not only captures the essence of Baltimore but also serves as a powerful tool for social transformation. Each artist who participates brings a unique vision and perspective to the project, contributing to a collective tapestry of stories that reflect the true fabric of our city.
We invite you to join us on this inspiring journey of discovery, connection, and artistic expression. Together, let's reimagine the role of photography in shaping narratives and champion the voices that deserve to be heard.
PARTICPATE ︎︎︎
We believe that every resident of Baltimore has a unique perspective to share, and we invite you to participate in the Picturing Baltimore project. This is an exciting opportunity to showcase your photographic vision, contribute to a community-driven art project, and be a part of the vibrant cultural tapestry of our city. Participation is free and accessible to all. Here's how you can get involved:
Obtaining Disposable Cameras: We have partnered with NomuNomu and Black Artist Research Space, two community-oriented venues, to distribute disposable cameras. Visit either location during their operating hours to pick up a camera. We will provide you with everything you need to get started. Please note that cameras are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so we recommend visiting as early as possible to secure your camera.
Guidelines for Capturing Photographs: Once you have your disposable camera, take some time to explore Baltimore and capture the moments that resonate with you. There are no specific themes or restrictions for the photographs. We encourage you to document the beauty, diversity, and everyday life of our city. Let your unique perspective shine through your lens.
Returning the Cameras: After a month of capturing photographs, we kindly ask you to return the disposable camera to the same location where you picked it up. Simply drop it off in the designated drop box at NomuNomu or Black Artist Research Space. This will allow us to process and scan the film, ensuring that your photographs can be included in the final exhibition.
Exhibition and Recognition: Your photographs have the opportunity to be showcased in our community art show and flat-files exhibition, held at NomuNomu and Black Artist Research Space. We value your ownership of your work, and you will retain copyright over your photographs. We will provide you with digital copies of your images and celebrate your contribution to the project.
We believe that by providing disposable cameras and embracing the diverse perspectives of Baltimore residents, we can create a compelling visual narrative that reflects the richness and complexity of our city. Your participation is instrumental in making this project a success.
